Saturday Outdoor Demos

9:00 – 10:00: How to Show Sheep (Friedericke Kazo, Sheep Show Tent)
This is workshop will provide participants with an introduction to the basics of showing sheep. We will briefly cover preparation for showing the differences in showing meat versus wool breeds and showmanship. Following the lecture period, participants will be paired and have a hands-on opportunity to learn how to enter a ring, walk a sheep and set it up for judging.

12:00 – 1:00: Handling Sheep So They Don’t Handle You! (Andy Rice, Main Gate Demo)
Sheep can be tough to move around. Learn how to move your sheep with less stress for both you and your sheep.

1:00 – 2:00: Herding Dog Demo (David and Colin Kennard, Main Gate Demo)

2:00 – 3:00: Condition Scoring/Trimming Feet (Andy Rice, Main Gate Demo)
How do you tell the weight of your sheep under all that wool? Get your hands on them! Taking the mystery out of condition and the fear out of hoof trimming.

9:30 – 11:00: Darning Drop In (Judith Bastianelli)
Learn the old-fashioned art, with modern tips and tricks, of darning to prolong and add a bit of cachet to you precious garments.

11:00 – 12:30: Kids Wet Felted Jellyfish (Sherri Bulluck)
In this demo, I will be showing how to do “no-mess” felting in a zip lock bag. Wet felting in a zip lock bag will produce a piece of felt that, when dry, can be turned into a cute jellyfish that can be hung anywhere you would like! $5 fee paid to instructor while supplies last.

1:00 – 2:30: Drop in Knit and Crochet (Marilyn Valentine)
This demo is for beginners who want to give it a try or experienced who would like some help with a project. Or just come craft with me! I’ll have spare hooks/needles and yarn to use.

2:30 – 4:00: How Fleeces are Judged (Nadine Chounet)
This class will start with shearing and preparation of your fleece and presentation of that fleece and then move onto how a judge really sees the fleece and judges it in competition. Questions welcome.

11:00 – 12:30: Getting To Know Your Fleece: From Growing It To Harvesting It (Nadine Chounet)
This class will start with the breed of sheep you choose, feeding, illness and how it affects your fleeces, shearing and then care. We will go into how to set up your fleeces in preparation if you are going to show them, or simply store them for later use or sending them to a processor.

1:00 – 2:30: How does your wool look to a mill? (Green Mountain Spinnery)
At this demo we will chat about getting wool ready for a mill, different grades of wool, and the yarn that you can make. Bring your own wool or just look at others!

Saturday Lectures (Education Building, LH)

9:30 – 11:00: “FFA 101” with the Dover FFA Chapter (Panel Discussion)
In this panel discussion, you can ask questions and learn what it is like to be an FFA member in NH. We will be talking about FFA history, opportunities in the FFA, and what activities we participate in as a chapter. The National FFA makes a positive difference in the lives of students by developing their potential for premier leadership, personal growth, and career success through agricultural education.

11:00 – 12:30: Lambing Down and Dirty (Patty Williams)
This lecture will quickly cover lambing basics such as what you need to do, common problems, and what you need on hand.

1:00 – 2:30: National Scrapie Eradication Program Update (Nicole Giguere, DVM, MS)
Discussion of the prion disease Scrapie, as well as the current status of scrapie eradication efforts in the US and review of the 3 components of the Scrapie Eradication Program.

2:30 – 4:00: Lindsey Woolsey: What is it and its History (Patty Williams)
The Lindsey Woolsey cloth is a traditional woven cloth worn throughout time. This lecture will discuss how it is made and when and where it was used.

9:30 – 11:00: Alpaca 101 (Megan Long)
Have you ever thought about owning some alpacas but don’t know where to get started? Come learn the ins and outs about alpaca ownership. We will go over requirements, the different types of alpaca farmers, and what to do with their fiber!

11:00 – 12:30: How to Choose your Breed of Sheep (Patty Williams)
Deciding on the perfect breed of sheep for you can be complicated with 100’s of breeds to choose from. We will take a look at the process backwards to help you find the best breed for you.

2:30 – 4:00: Starting your Flock 101 (Patty Williams)
Taking on a flock of sheep (even a small one) is a big decision. We will discuss the advantages, disadvantages, and basics of what is needed to have your own flock.
